Learn how to install the Strider 20x Pedal Kit on your 20x Sport balance bike. Step-by-step instructions, common mistakes, and tips for a smooth conversion.
Quick answer
To install the Strider 20x Pedal Kit, you'll attach the pedal crank assembly and pedals to your 20x Sport frame using the included hardware. The kit is compatible only with the Strider 20x Balance Bike, and the process takes about 30 minutes.
Before you start
The Strider 20x Pedal Kit is designed exclusively for the Strider 20x Sport balance bike. It is not compatible with other models. The kit includes the crank assembly, pedals, chain, and hardware. You will need a 15 mm pedal wrench and a 5 mm Allen key (not included).
Make sure the bike is on a stable surface and the rear brake is engaged. The 20x Sport features dual drum hand brakes, so you can safely hold the bike still while working.
Common mistakes to avoid
A frequent error is installing the pedals on the wrong side. The left pedal has reverse threads – turning it clockwise loosens it. Always double-check the pedal markings (L and R) before threading.
Another mistake is over-tightening the crank bolts. Use moderate force; the recommended torque is about 15-20 Nm. Overtightening can strip the threads or damage the crank arm.
Installation steps
- Remove the footrests: Use a 5 mm Allen key to remove the two bolts securing each footrest to the frame. Set the footrests aside. They are not needed with the pedal kit. Keep the footrests and bolts in a safe place – you may reinstall them if you convert back to a balance bike.
- Attach the crank assembly: Slide the bottom bracket axle through the frame’s bottom bracket shell. Place the crank arms on each side, aligning the flat spots on the axle with the flats inside the crank arms. Tighten the crank arm bolts with a 5 mm Allen key until snug. Ensure the crank arms are at 180° to each other – they should point opposite directions. If they are not aligned, loosen and reposition before tightening fully.
- Install the pedals: Thread the right pedal (marked R) onto the right crank arm clockwise. Thread the left pedal (marked L) onto the left crank arm counterclockwise. Tighten each pedal with a 15 mm pedal wrench until firm. Double-check the pedal markings. Forcing a pedal onto the wrong side can strip the threads and ruin the crank arm.
- Attach the chain and adjust tension: Place the chain around the front chainring and rear sprocket. Connect the chain using the master link. Adjust the rear wheel position to achieve proper chain tension – about 1 cm of vertical play at the midpoint of the chain. If the chain is too tight, the pedals will be hard to turn. If too loose, the chain may skip or fall off. Check tension after the first ride and readjust if needed.
- Final checks: Spin the pedals to ensure the chain runs smoothly and the crank arms do not rub the frame. Check that all bolts are tight. Test the brakes – the 20x Sport’s dual drum hand brakes should work normally. Take a short test ride in a safe area. Listen for unusual noises and feel for smooth pedal rotation. Adjust chain tension or bolt tightness as needed.
